1906-1918. In 1879, Lambert's home address changed to New Jersey and the following year he was replaced by Samuel. The business was now known as "William Humphrey & Bro., Liquors", but still located at 401 N 3 rd Street. In 1882, William dropped out and disappears from the directories. He was replaced by John W. Martin to yield the "Humphrey & Martin". They remained at 401 3 rd St until Prohibition. Interestingly, John Martin was living with Samuel Humphrey at 535 Franklin for a couple of years after he first appears in the directories. Prohibition killed to business. Samuel Humphrey retired and both he and his son (Samuel Jr.) disappeared from the directories in the early 20's. John W. Martin left the partnership in 1917 but made a lateral move to the Philadelphia Erdmann Vinegar Co. Vinegar was produced from alcohol by fermentation and was a natural and respectable extension of the liquor business in the years leading up to Prohibition. The 1921 directory showed him to be Vice President of this old and revered company. They used the brand names: "Anchor" and "Bouquet" Business name timeline: Address timeline: | ||
