Lookin’ Back at Las Vegas
by dick bales
I was fortunate enough to attend the Las Vegas Bottle Club 40th Annual Show and
Sale this weekend. I was not the only shot glass collector there; Robin Preston,
Ed Sipos, and his wife, Alice, also attended.
Sale tables filled a convention hall at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown
Las Vegas, and more than a few dealers had some shots on them. It was fun trying
to ferret out the glass, but I also enjoyed looking at the hundreds of items
being sold. I had taken along my twenty-two-year-old son with me, who fancies
himself quite the poker player. Several dealers were selling vintage poker
chips, and I bought some for my son.
But I think that Robin, Ed, and Alice would all agree with me that the most
memorable time was spent after the show closed. The four of us went out for
dinner, and we all enjoyed a wide and varied conversation.
It is not too early to be thinking about the National Bottle Show, August 13 and
14, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. If we had enough people interested in attending,
we could get a banquet room at the convention site for our own private dinner
party during one of those days. If you think you might like to attend, please
e-mail me at dbales@dickbales.com.
I hope that all of you think about coming to Michigan. It is clear to me after
this weekend that while it is great to collect glass, collecting the friends you
meet at a show is even better.
