The
2007 FOHBC Annual had all the makings of a perfect shot-glass storm: a
central location in the heart of pre-Prohibition whiskey country, a
well-advertised Federation show that was sure to draw in both buyers and
sellers, and a convention center that was capable of holding hundreds of tables
laden with primo glass. Who among the seriously glass-stricken collecting
crowd could resist?
I had hmmmmed and hawwwed
about this one since January, despite the obvious temptations. I had
finally completed the eternal move south but still had much to accomplish and
deadlines to meet, so I figured I would have to be content with hearing about
the spoils of the hunt from Dick Bales, for whom this was a home-coming show.
True, Dick lives at the north end of the state and Collinsville nestles up
against St Louis in the south, but it IS still Illinois, Land of Lincoln and
gateway to er -- Minnesota and the Dakotas - right?!!
But ultimately glass-lust won out over unpacking and work, and I
happily jumped in the car and headed north to escape the oppressive heat of Hotlanta at its worst. At least I hope 104ºF in the shade is the
worst this sprawling city has to offer!
