Charles Gibson was a native of OH and began his liquor business in Jamestown in 1875. He moved to Salamanca in 1877 and by the time the firm incorporated in 1907 they claimed to be one of the country's largest mail order companies.

The company used the brand names:
"Cooks Rye", and "Coon's Rye."
