The Wilsons suggest that the company was originally owned by Earl A Fargo and Jerome B Fargo. They also suggest the business was sold in 1860 to one of their liquor salesmen, Calvin W Kellogg, in partnership with J C Wilmerding. The company name was later changed to Wilmerding, Kellogg & Co. The Fargos set up a new company under the name E A Fargo & Co.
