The Westfield region is known for the Concord grape, introduced ca. 1896, which was the impetus for formation of the grape juice industry initiated by Dr. Charles Welch.

Byron Fenner was a pharmacist who wrote the Fenner Formulary, a technical work dealing with the formulation of medicinal substances. He had premises at 81 S. Portage Street: it is not certain whether or not he is the same Fenner that was involved in grape juice production.
