Cervus alces is the Latin name for the European elk. The addition of the clockface to creates the emblem of the BPOE (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks), a fraternal order established in February, 1868. The 11 o'clock hour is the time at which Lodge meetings end and toasts are offered to absent brothers.
