The Old Style Hand Made Distillery |
Cecil (1999; p. 103) provides a history: 1836: The distillery was built on Walnut Ridge farm by J W Dant. It was located 10 miles west of the Loretto city border (1892 line). The distillery eventually became a stop on the L & N Railroad, known as Dant Station. 1891: Wallace Dant assumed control from his father. 1892: Insurance underwriter records noted that the distillery was of frame construction with a shingle roof. The property included a single bonded warehouse, built of brick and with a metal or slate roof. It was located 225 ft west of the still. Cattle pens stood 100 ft south of the still. The insurance records suggest that it was still being operated by J W Dant. 1897: The distillery incorporated as The Dant Distillery Co. 1920: Prohibition forced the distillery to close. By then, Wallace's younger brother George was running operations. 1934: The distillery resumed operations after Repeal, under the control of George W Dant (President), T S Dant (VP), J E "Shorty" Dant as Secretary and Treasurer, and A F Dant as distiller. |
