The McBrayer Distillery |
The following history comes from Cecil (1999). The distillery was established ca. 1870 by Capt. John H McBrayer, in a building being used as a mill. J H McBrayer sold the distillery to Judge W H McBrayer, date unknown. Judge McBrayer sold to W W Johnson & Co. In 1885, W W Johnson sold to E H Taylor & Mayhair. W W Johnson re-acquires the still in 1888. 1892: Insurance underwriter records suggest that the distillery was of frame construction with a shingle roof. The property included a three warehouses: Warehouse A -- iron-clad with a metal or slate roof, located 170 ft south of the still. Warehouse B -- iron-clad with a metal or slate roof, located 110 ft south of the still. Warehouse C -- brick with a metal or slate roof, located 240 ft south of the still. This was a free warehouse. In 1892, the still was being operated by John Meyer, late The J H McBrayer Dist. Co., E H Taylor Jr & Sons, and the New Market Distilling Co. 1907: Johnson sells to Rosenfield Bros & Co. of Chicago, owners of the Sunny Brook brand and distillery. 1920: The distillery was closed and dismantled. |
