The Edgewater Distillery was built in 1837 by Shawhan & Brandon one mile west of Lair Station, four miles SW of Cynthiana. At that time, it had a capacity of about one hundred bushels per day. It was operated by the company for about four years, at which point Brandon left the partnership and Shawhan continued on his own. In 1850, the distillery passed through bankruptcy and was acquired by John Lail, Sr. Lail operated the distillery for about three years under the name of Lail & Foley. 1854: Lail & Foley leased the distillery to Shawhan, Snell & Megibben, who ran it for some three years. The junior partner, Thomas J. Megibben, then bought it and has operated it until 1882 or later. By this time, capacity of the distillery had been increased to five hundred bushels per day. 1892: Insurance underwriter records note that the distillery was of frame construction with a metal or slate roof. Warehouses B, C and D -- three adjoining bonded warehouses built of brick with metal or slate roofs, located 100 ft SW of the still. Warehouse E -- an iron-clad, bonded warehouse built of stone with a metal or slate roof, located 250 ft SW of the still.
