Information comes from Thomas (PCSF), who suggests that William W Ward was originally the owner of the Railroad House, a saloon located in an old railway depot at A & 6 th Sts. In 1880, he is suggested to partner with J L Murphy in another saloon at 96 D St., perhaps the Grotto.

By 1882, Ward was sole owner. In 1907, he established a partnership with Zan Frye in running The Grotto and it lasted until 1914 when Frye bought him out. It finally closed in 1918 with the advent of Prohibition.
