I'm sorely tempted to tell you about the Navy this week, but instead it's the Army who comes under the spotlight...... This week's SOTW is a beautifully-red/white-etched glass from Davenport Iowa. It's listed in OASG (p. 48) and it shows up once very 6 months or so on eBay, but I thought I'd to feature it here because it usually lists and sells well off the radar of most pre-pro collectors. It's a souvenir shot glass dated 1901 from Geo. Metzger, celebrating the veterans of the civil war. That's partly why it gets missed by most of the eBay regulars: this one listed under category Militaria: Civil War. Mr Metzger apparently had an illustrious history that included long service in the Grand Army of the Republic: "At the age of seventeen he enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Twenty-fifth New York Volunteers. He was severely wounded at Gettysburg and again at Auburn Church, Virginia, and was mustered from service with honorable discharge in July, 1865." Click on the photo below to see the full history, as described by the seller. This latest "GAR glass" was found early by bluroc who hung on to it for several days before it was felled by the Military for a very respectable $232.50. Congratulations to the winner!!
Note that some previous picks for "Shot of the Week" can be found in The Archives. |
