Robin has said it before; I will say
it again. eBay is currently awash in some great, great, glass. So much so, it is
difficult to choose just one SOTW. But trust me, I’ll manage.
I have a strange penchant for "pig" or "hog"
glasses, as noted in my Volume 2, No.
2, "Common Stuff" column (would that be an obsession or a
fetish???? Ed). I especially like the "Don’t Drown the [hog]"
glasses, and so I was more than intrigued to see this Charles
D. Moul glass come up for sale.
The auction attracted eleven bids. Alas, I was not the winning bidder; York55boy took it for what seems to me to be an incredible (absurd?) price of $182.53. Incidently, there is at least one other Charles Moul glass out there -- a 1851 Violet Springs Whiskey. |
Ironically, another "Don’t
Drown the [hog]" glass hit the cyber auction block at about the same
time as this Charles Moul hog glass did.
This time, though, someone must have thrown some "under the table" cash at the seller, as the bidding ended early for this glass from the Pee Dee Distilling Co., Portsmouth, Virginia. |
Those of you who drool over enameled glass were treated to another Victoria shot. Churncreek took it home for $204.40. (Unfortunately, I can’t tell you who the other bidders were, due to eBay’s new policy of hiding the names of the non-winning also-rans.) | |
It cost him dearly, but shotfaced was the
winner of this
marvelous 427 Liberty Whiskey glass from the Schuetz-Renziehausen and
Co., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Compare this beauty with the other glass, a "text only" glass, that this company made. What a difference between the two! One wonders what the company was thinking when they had these glasses made. Did they use the "text only" glass first, and then, as their business prospered, did they decide to get the more glamorous glass? Shotfaced is going to have to pick up this other "text only" glass to complete the set, but I bet that he won’t have to pay $203.61 for this one like he did for the 427 Liberty glass. |
This super minty Red Fox Rye looks like it just
came out of the packing crate. When the eBay
hammer came down, oldwhiskey was the winner, but $204.52 poorer.
Is it possible that this zombie-eyed red fox will be joining his red-furred buddy in oldwhiskey’s display cabinet? |
(Wow, did you notice that the winning bids of
the last three glasses were all within a dollar of each other? Hmmm, all I have
to do is bid $205.00 and I can take home any glass on eBay. . . .)
All
these are great glasses, but what about the shot of the week? To my way of
thinking, there is one clear choice: this Golden
Cross Pure Rye Whiskey. ( I admit it; enamel leaves me cold, but I am a
sucker for color.)
There was spirited bidding for this glass, with bluroc, junkmoney, and lakerdude joining in the fray.
But when the smoke cleared, shotfaced was again the winner of this unlisted glass from Milford, Massachusetts, with a bid of $128.49.
Congratulations to all the winners!
