August Schlegel was born in Gutstadt, Altkirch, East Prussia (now Northern Poland) in 1855. He emigrated to the US in 1880 and found work in the glasshouses of Pittsburg, PA., making paperweights and similar items. He later opened a saloon and hotel on California Ave in Allegheny, where he and his family (wife Mathilda, five daughters and three sons) also resided. The date is uncertain, but the hotel was believed to have been built around 1890. Photographs below show the hotel, the family outside the bar, and August behind the bar is shown below (click for larger image). August's wife, Mathilda, was neé Jankosky. The Jankosky family were also Pittsburgh saloon -keepers, although details of ownership and location are unknown.
August was assisted in the family business by son John E ("Jack") Schlegel (b. July 7, 1887). He joined his father at age 15 and eventually assumed control. The city directories show two additional addresses for a John W Schlegel and John Schlegel in 1908 and later years: the nature of these establishments is uncertain at present.
August died in 1921. John continued running the hotel and restaurant through Prohibition and died on Dec 23., 1933. An obituary detailing his generosity to the needy of Allegheny during the Depression is shown below.
