The following is taken from the "Pittsburgh and Allegheny Illustrated Review: Historical, Biographical and Commercial". It was published by J M Elstner & Co., Pittsburgh, PA., in 1889:
Getty & Co.-Wholesale Dealers in Liquors; 182 and 184 First Avenue. Mr. James Getty, Jr. established this important business in 1872, and has since conducted it with marked and steadily increasing success. He has a had a life long experience in this business, his father having been a distiller for many years, and thoroughly understanding every department of the business, he is enabled to conduct his affairs in a manner which has secured to him the most satisfactory results. He makes a specialty of the Premium brand of pure rye whisky, which is in high repute on account of its excellent quality and flavor, and in which he has a large trade, covering Western Pennsylvania and the entire State of Ohio. At his premises at 182 and 184 First avenue he carries constantly on hand very heavy stocks of these superior goods, and gives employment to about ten hands. His annual business aggregates $100,000, and the amount of his sales steadily increases every year.
Mr. Getty is a prominent and highly respected citizen of Pittsburgh, in the welfare of which city he is deeply interested, and has contributed in various way to many charitable and public institutions here. He is a business man of a high order of ability, whose reputation for square dealing and probity, both in public and private life, is unsurpassed. He is the owner of the First Avenue Hotel and its furniture. This hotel, which is elegantly fitted and furnished throughout, has all the modern conveniences and accessories required for the proper entertainment of the traveling public, and is one of the leading hotels of the city. Mr. Getty is now representing the Second Ward as Select Councilman. |

Major street name renumbering in 1884 and again 1896, again in 1899 (Ohio Ave). Washington became Warrington in 1910. Just liquor dealer pages until 1899, except in 1874, 1878, 1880. 1875, 1887 are missing. 1877 and 1878 pages are identical, so one is missing. 1886, 1891, is partial listing. 1901 - started showing phone exchanges and numbers for all. 1907. No Distillers, Liquors begins with "Bigley". 1909, 1912, no distillers.
