PO&N: The business was established by Henry and A. C. Van Beil. In 1878 it became Henry Van Beil & Co, with the partners being Henry, his son Hermann B. Van Beil, and Thomas Massey. All were Philadelphia natives. They were the largest importer of liquor and cigars in the city. The premises were a 4 story and basement building, 20 x 112 feet in area.
In 1892, Van Beil joined with several other prominent Philadelphia wholesalers to build the Philadelphia Pure Rye Whiskey distillery in Bucks Co., PA.
Van Beil & Co. continues as Massey & Co. until 1918
