The business was established in 1887 by Wm. Mulherin. He was born in Ireland and emmigrated to Philadelphia, PA. in 1864. He was later joined in partnership by his Philadelphia-born sons J.E. Mulherin and A.P. Mulherin.
Mulherin & Sons were importers, compounders, distillers and rectifiers with interests in the Mutual Distilling Co. of Uniontown, KY and the Philadelphia Rye Distilling Co. of Eddington, PA. "Philadelphia Old and New" tells us that their premises at Front & Master was a 3 story brick building with an area of 20 x 144 feet (see photo below). They had outlets for their wares in PA, MD, DE and NJ.
