PO&N (p. 114): Founded by the uncle of S. Irwin Middleton in 1843 (A slug plate bottle shows an E.P.Middleton Pure Rye, 1843). Gross had been connected with the house for many years. In 1887, S. Irwin Middleton and Christian Gross formed the partnership. They and their business (a 25 x 100 feet, 4 story and basement building) are pictured.
