The following is based on an account of the history of the Arata Brothers recalled by a great-granddaughter of Francesco Giovanni Arata.
" There were three Arata brothers and all three were liquor dealers, both wholesale and retail: Guiseppe Arata was the oldest of the three and was born in Italy in 1854. He emigrated to Portland in 1883 and it was he who established the first liquor business, G. Arata & Co. In 1891, it was located at 267 First Street.
Francesco Giovanni Arata, (also known as F.G. or John) was born in 1862, while Stephano Angelo Arata (known to all as Angelo), was the youngest brother, born in 1865. John and Angelo are believed to have emigrated to Portland around 1887. They established a business with Charles E. Donohoe, known as Arata, Donohoe and Co., located at 264 First Street. At some point, Charles Donohoe left and it became just Arata & Co. Angelo also had a separate company called S.A. Arata and Company. At some point, and I am not sure of the exact dates and the times could be overlapping, John and Angelo formed Arata Bros; it could have been 1906, as suggested by Thomas. The saloons and wholesale business were located in three different places in downtown Portland over the years.
Guiseppe died in 1902 in Portland. When Prohibition was enacted, the remaining brothers became grocers and were one of the largest importers of olive oil on the west coast.
Neither Guiseppe nor Angelo ever had any children and while F. G. had eight children, there were only five grandchildren and of those only my father carried on the family name to the next generation which is myself and my four brothers".
The main city directory pages in 1906 (Polk: p. 166) suggest that Arata Bros was a saloon owned by Stephano A Arata and Frank G Arata, with N Louis Arata as bartender.
In 1914, Arata Bros. is under the sole control of Frank G Arata, with Chas Arata as Bartender and N Louis Arata as Clerk. Nicola Louis Arata was a younger half-brother of Guiseppe, F.G. and Angelo. He went by Louis. Chas (Charles or Carlo) Arata was the husband of Mary Arata who was a younger half-sister of Guiseppe, F.G., and Angelo.
By 1916, Arata Bros lists as Grocers at the same location (71 6 th). Business name timeline: Arata Bros. Business category timeline (abbreviations decoded below): S, W (1911), W-R

Directory copies include saloons for most years: they have not been included in the database. 1865: copy quality is poor and transciption mistakes are likely. 1883: no addresses. Some of the listings were researched in person in the Portland central library (5/2006).
