The following is taken from an unidentified volume extolling the business prowess of Chicago at the end of the 19th century (1890's):
"JOHN H. VAN HOUSEN, President of the Steuben Wine. Co, was born in Steuben County, N.Y. He was the projector and became largely the owner of the Steuben Wine Company, which was organized first as private firm at Bath, Steuben County, N.Y., in 1869. It established a Western branch at Jackson, Michigan, in 1872, and one in Chicago in 1876, at 220 Wabash Avenue. From there this branch was removed to 170 Madison Street in 1878, and finally to its present location at 246 and 248 Madison Street in 1885. It has been incorporated with $200,000 capital stock, the principal part of which is held by Mr. Van Housen. The concern does wholesale business, which is one of the largest in the United States. While the decorations of this establishment are severely plain they are rich and costly. But the most appropriate and suggestive decorations are in the display of choice wines and liquors which sets off the warerooms of this great establishment. Bottle goods in the greatest profusion and variety, and immense casks filled with the purest wines, fill every available storage space on the two spacious floors. Starting only a few years ago, in a small place on Wabash Avenue, by handling only goods of absolute purity, its trade has increased, compelling the concern to seek larger quarters from time to time, until it now occupies the largest store of its kind in America. It is is the concern at the head of which Mr. Van Housen stands, and the success of which has been his own success".

1860 - distillers page v difficult to read, 1872 unreadable, 1873 much missing, 1875 partial no DR, 1900 missing, 1903 no Wine & Liquor, 1904 J-S is unreadable, 1909: Major street renumbering with relocation of the E/W divide, 1911: minimal listing, another street renumbering, 1912 is missing, 1914: half distillers missing, 1915 no street addresses for distillers, 1917 no distillers in the business database, but includes the Telephone directory listings, 1918 no distillers and based on telephone directory only. There is some confusion on the dates of the directory - there were 4 sets variously labeled 1916-1919 but there were multiple xing out and inaccuracies. 1917 is a good bet, 1918 could be later. 1918: 5 th Ave becomes Wells
