Samuel B. Poyntz was born in Mason County, KY in 1819. He was married to Mary (Dewees) Poyntz and was son of William Poyntz, who had migrated from Pennsylvania and was an early settler of Kentucky. Samuel moved to Cincinnati in 1865 and was a wholesale grocer until becoming a distiller in Maysville, KY. Samuel and his sons owned or operated RD #6 of the 7th district.

The distillery business initially consisted of Samuel and Benjamin, his son, operating as Benj. B Poyntz & Sons. In 1881, Charles Baldwin Poyntz joined the firm. Charles was Benjamin's brother and had been working for the Indianapolis and St. Louis Railroad as accountant and paymaster for the previous eight years.
Samuel died in 1890 but the firm continued as Poyntz Bros. & Co.
