"Euclid Wine House"
"My great-grandfather started the Schuster Wine Co. in Cleveland soon after arriving in America from Kallstadt, Germany where the Schuster Wine Co was in continuous operation since 1590. The company in Germany was recently sold and the name has been changed.
The Schuster Wine Co. in Cleveland had their vineyards in what is now Euclid, Ohio. The company operated as a Winery until Prohibition when they developed syrups for making soda and for topping ice cream. This was not as successful as the Winery.
The vineyards were in Euclid because my great-grandfather believed that the moist air coming off of Lake Erie would make the grapes more succulent."
Thanks to Sandra Scheldt Bush McGonigal for sharing family history.
The company used the brand names: "Beech Hollow", "Beersford", "Bismarck", "Brinovic Gin", "Carnival Club", "Green Lawn", "Number Two", and "Uno - Club." | | Business name timeline: Schuster Wine Co. notes: W = Wines & Liquors, V =Wines, V-R = Wines & Liquors Retail, D = Distiller, DA = Distiller's Agent. The 1870's & 1880's directories were erratic and inconsistent in classifying the wholesalers and retailers, until 1883. In 1881 or 1882, Pearl Street and Detroit St (and possible others) were renumbered. 1886: listings for distillers. V-R is missing for 1895, 1896 directory pages are totally absent. There is a city-wide street renumbering that is hinted at in 1904, begins in earnest in 1905 (many numbers are the same but designated as "old"), and takes full effect in 1906.
