The Paris Distillery |
The Paris Distillery was located 1/2 mile east of Paris, on the Kentucky Central RR. The following timeline comes from Cecil (1999: p. 58) 1860: The distillery was built by Geo N Bedford and W T Buckner and operated from 1860 on as Buckner & Bedford. 1880: Buckner & Bedford sold out to Sam Clay Jr. 1882: The distillery was producing Paris Distillery Hand Made Sour Mash. It has a 412 bu capacity and a warehouse storage capacity of 15,000 barrels. 1884: T J Megibben was operating the plant. 1892: The distillery was leased to N J Walsh of Cincinnati.Insurance underwriter records from this time describe the distillery as being of frame construction with a metal or slate roof. The property included a frame cattle shed 225 ft west of the still, and five warehouses: Warehouse A -- brick with a metal or slate roof and located 350 ft north of the still. Warehouse B -- brick with a metal or slate roof, adjoining "A". Warehouse C -- brick with a metal or slate roof, located 300 ft NW. Warehouse D -- a new brick building with a metal or slate roof, located 180 ft NW of the still and 10 ft east of "C" A Free Warehouse -- iron clad, located 210 ft north of the still. At that time, it was being operated by N J Walsh, as "Paris Distilling Co." 1901: The plant was acquired by the Trust and run by Julius Kessler. 1905: Production was interrupted by a storm that blew the roof off one of the warehouses and knocked their boiler smoke stacks over. 1913: In May, a fire started in the granary and spread to the still house, gutting it and causing damage estimated at $100,000. It was not rebuilt. |
