The Graystone Distillery

The Graystone Distillery sat beside the Ros P Pepper on Hamilton Ave.Both had been built by Geo. C Buchanan of Newcomb, Buchanan & Co, which in 1871 was already the largest distilling company in Kentucky.

1885: The Anderson & Nelson Distilleries Co. was incorporated with Herman Becurts, President, Fred W. Adams, Secretary and Manager. Geo Buchanan managed sales. The financing for the reorganization was provided by the UK-based Paris, Allen & Co. The company by this time controlled six distillery warehouses and nine major brands. The Pepper and Graystone distilleries were operated as the Allen-Bradley Distilling Co.

1890: The Graystone distillery burned to the ground and its substantial output was was later replaced by the Elk Run.

1892: Insurance underwriter records list several warehouses and other buildings at the site of the Pepper and Graystone and make no mention of a previous fire. The distillery was noted to be fitted with a sprinkler system. The warehouses were all brick (save one) with metal or slate roofs:
Warehouse -- Whitestone -- located 75 ft east of the still(s).
Warehouse -- Pepper Free
Warehouse -- Slocum -- located 600 ft south of the still(s)
Warehouse -- Central -- located 650 ft south of the still(s)
Warehouse -- Williams -- located 700 ft south of the still(s). The Slocum, Central and Williams warehouses were all adjoining, separated by firewalls.
Iron Annex -- iron clad, located 1000 ft south of the still(s).

Additional building included a cattle barn, a frame mill and grain elevator, and an ageing room adjoining the east end of the Whitestone warehouse. At that time, it was being operated by The Allen-Bradley Distilleries, by Wm E Bradley.

1905: The company and its distilleries became a part of the Trust (KD&W).

1920-1933: During prohibition the warehouses of the company were used by the American Medicinal Spirits Co. for concentration warehouses. but the distillery was ultimately razed and not rebuilt upon Repeal.
