The Greenbrier Distillery

Cecil (1999) provides a brief history. It was operated initially by R B Hayden, then acquired by John J Brown and Charles Brown.

1883: The distillery was sold to William M Collins & Co., who operated it as the Greenbrier Distilling Co. Collins eventually left the company, leaving Hackett as President and G McGowan (whose name appears in the warehouse records below) as Secretary.

1891: The distillery was rebuilt.

1892: Insurance underwriter records describe the distillery as being of frame construction with a metal or slate roof. A doubler and boiler-house stood 18 ft distant from the still, and there was a cattle barn 256 ft SW. The property included thee warehouses, all iron-clad:
Warehouse A -- located 166 ft NW of the still.
Warehouse B -- 180 ft NW of the still
Warehouse C -- 160 ft NW of the still. Warehouse C adjoined Warehouses A and B.

At the time, it was being operated as the Greenbrier Distilling Co., by G M Gowan. The insurance records locate it 5-1/2 miles east of Bardstown at Woodlawn

1920: The plant closed with Prohibition, but a new distillery was built on the site after Repeal.
