The H Sutherland Distillery
RD #168, 5 th District
Nelson County, KY

The distillery was located 3 miles south of Bardstown. Cecil (1999; p. 125) notes that the first distillery here was built by John Sutherland in 1780 or earlier, with William taking over operations in 1824. The still had a capacity of 20 bushels per day. William's son Henry took over in 1862 when his father died.

Insurance underwriter records compiled in 1892 suggest that the distillery was of frame construction and had a single frame warehouse with a metal or slate roof. It was located 380 ft east of the still. At that time, it was being operated by Henry Sutherland as Pearl of Nelson Distilling Co.

When Henry died at age 90 (Jan. 12, 1916), his three sons continued operating it until Prohibition. It was not reopened on Repeal.
