The Fible & Crabb Distillery |
Cecil notes that the distillery was built by D M Fible & W L Crabb in 1872. They selected a location near Eminence on the L&N Railroad for ease of transport, producing brands such as "Kentucky Poteen", "Blue Ribbon", and "Dew Drops". When Fible died in 1891, the company reorganized and began trading as the Fible & Crabb Distilling Co. with W L Crabb as President, Geo. E Rice, Secretary. Insurance underwriter records compiled in 1892 suggest that the distillery was of brick construction with a metal or slate roof. Cattle kept on the grounds were housed in a frame shed 200 ft east of the still. The property included a two bonded warehouses: Warehouse A -- brick and iron-clad construction with a metal or slate roof, located 29 ft east of the still Warehouse B -- frame construction with a metal or slate roof, located 400 ft west of the still. At the time, the distillery was being operated by Fible & Crabb as the Fible & Crabb Distilling Co. In 1900, the plant was acquired by George Benz & Sons of Minnepolis. Benz had interests in several distilleries, but "Blue Ribbon" was their main brand and they changed the name of the distillery to reflect this fact. They also operated as Eminence Distillery Co. with offices in Louisville. Aliases that this distillery's product was sold under |
