The Burks Spring Distillery |
According to Cecil, the Burks Spring distillery was built in 1805 by Charles Burks. Cecil has the location as being 3-1/2 miles SE of Loretto, while the insurance records (below) suggest it was located 3 miles north. Cecil notes that Burks died in 1831 but operations were continued by the family. The distllery was rebuilt and expanded after George R Burks joined the company in 1878. Insurance company underwriter records from 1892 show that George R Burks was the owner and identify the distillery as being of frame construction. There were two warehouses: Warehouse A -- frame with a metal or slate roof, 115 ft SE of the still. Warehouse B -- frame, part iron clad, with a metal or slate roof, 115 ft SW of the still. Cecil notes that John C Weller had contracted for the entire output of the still during 1906, and by 1919, Thomas L Smith & Sons of Boston were claiming to be Proprietors. Cecil mentions that the family sold the still and the associated farm to Ernest Bickett in 1920 when Prohibition was enacted. Aliases that this distillery's product was sold under |
