Cecil (p. 113) has this listed as RD #22 in the 6th District, but the distillery was actually #RD 3 of the 7th District of KY. The distillery was probably built around 1866 and was operated by John N Thomas and Henry E Pogue. The company incorporated in 1876, becoming the H E Pogue Distilling Co. Insurance underwriter records from 1892 list a brick distillery with a metal or slate roof. Other buildings surrounding the still-house included: Cattle pens -- 65 ft north of the still, Warehouse H -- brick with a metal or slate roof, 26 ft SE Warehouse I -- iron-clad with a metal or slate roof, 270 ft SE Warehouse J -- brick with a metal or slate roof, 150 ft SE, and a Free Warehouse located on the east side of Market street. It was also brick with a metal or slate roof. The insurance records identify John N Thomas as being the owner, operating as H E Pogue Distillery Co. |
