Red & Whittled!

570g

Jesse Moore & Co. (picture of elk antlers) Moore Hunt & Co. San Francisco (abbrv. descr.); crude glop top, dense yet transparent oxblood red, hammered with whittle, sloppy glop top, 360* of spillover, extreme crudity, this bottle sold on the last list – it had a Y shaped annealing flash of less than ¼” on the right shoulder seam– it was returned with a 1”+ spider - I sent it USPS insured but since the buyer mailed it back uninsured without contacting me or the post office prior to re-shipping - I’m stuck with an uninsured loss.

Was $395~

NOW $195~

634g

W. C. Peacock & Co. / logo / Honolulu, H. I. / Wine & Liquor Merchants; crude glop top, deep red amber, hammered with whittle, bold strike, crudely applied top, a great piece!

495

677g

Roth & Co. / large intertwined logo / San Francisco; crude glop top, deep yet transparent blood red, bold crisp strike, hammered with chunky whittle, crooked neck, massive swirls abound, bubbles & tears, according to the owner - the bottle has been repaired at the top with a new LTC, it is not visible and whomever did the work was an artist, displays perfect.

195

677g

Roth & Co. / large intertwined logo / San Francisco; crude glop top, deep rich oxblood red - part of the “German Connection”, decent drip on the glop, strong strike, absolutely hammered with whittle, minor 1 – 2 mm flat fleck off lip, a few smaller bubbles, a chunk of tobacco here and there.

450

688g

S. B. Rothernburg & Co / Old Judge / (picture of fat judge holding up a glass of bourbon) / Kentucky Bourbon / Trade Mark Registered / San Francisco : crude glop top, swirled hues of copper & oxblood red, hammered with whittle, sloppy glop top, lots of  spillover, extreme overall crudity, 4 mold, a beautiful example.

595

750g

Spruance Stanley & Co.(inside horse-shoe) Wholesale / Liquor Dealers / San Francisco, Cal.; crude glop top with loads of gooey drip, varying densities of blood red, star on base, loaded with fine “goosebump” whittle, 4 mold, a couple of bubbles, awesome strike, killer example!

425

Remington Liquor Co./ Distilled Just Right / logo / 101 3rd. St./ Portland, Ore.; tooled, lt. yellow orange amber, swirled shoulders, crudely tooled top with a crooked neck, little spot of content residue, as nice as they come – great color & character. Also have a darker one.

265

662

Remington Liquor Co./ Distilled Just Right / logo / 425 Washington St./ Portland, Ore.; tooled, lt. yellow orange amber, swirled shoulders, tooled top, numerous small bubbles, a couple of nearly undetectable light scratches keep it from being perfect, fancy bottle & color

100

858

The Winedale Co. / fancy logo / Oakland, Ca.; reddish orange amber, tooled, swirled shoulders, bubbles and a touch of character, a very attractive bottle that doesn’t surface often

85

And now, for the rest of the story…

UL

(Brilliant 7up - Emerald Green tooled spin mold cylinder fifth) (Label Only) Blend / Bottled by / Edward Germain Wine Co. / 635 S. Main St. Los Angeles Ca. / Angelo Meyers / Philadelphia Monongahela / detailed picture of a pot still / Whiskey; the label is aged crème with gold black and sepia printing, it is 100% - free of loss or damage, it is extremely ornate and a picture is a must, this does not appear to be a marriage and looks to be the real deal, bottle retains some interior content haze which may just rinse out, it may well be unique.

175

5

Adams - Booth Co. (picture of anchor) Sacramento, Cal.; crude tool top, light SCA, bold strike, nice bubble in the long tapered collar, touch of character, a real sparkler!

325

28

55

38

Behind the Barrel / 25 5th St. / D.J. Tobin Prop. / Tobeys; all in round slug plate, tooled, extremely light amber, loads of bubbles – loads of character, a rare sparkler, our first.

1150

67

Boulevard OK Bourbon / H. Buneman / Sole Agents / S.F. Cal.(all inside of what appears to be a belt with a buckle and a sharks fin?); tooled, shades of medium to darker amber, very well defined strike, bubbles give it a touch of character, showy and just flat rare.

725

68

Boulevard OK Bourbon / Buneman & Martinoni / Sole Agents / S.F. Cal.(all inside a picture of a belt with a buckle and a sharks fin?); glop top, clear with a slight gray caste, very crisp and well defined strike, decent spillover, couple of very light scratches, touch of character, these are tough and this is the nicest one we’ve come across. A matching pair.

595

72

J. E. Brady / Sequoia / Mill Valley, Cal.; tooled, shades of medium orange amber, crisp strike, somewhat crude considering the ca. 1905 age, this is the finest example of the 3 that we’ve seen with some whittle and character, recently found in a wood shed with the original cork still in the top & never in the ground – it rates about attic mint - about impossible to improve upon.

995

79

Golden Rule / XXXX / Whiskey / Braunschweiger & Co. Inc. S.F.; tooled top, light to medium orange amber, bold strike, lots of character, about mint, a very scarce tool top.

Dierssen & Co. / Sacramento / Cal.; glop top, clear with a steel caste, clean, well struck (the buffalo is very well defined), free of the normal annealing cracks inevitably present on this bottle, one light scratch is the only excuse I can find, it’s been quite a while since we’ve had a mint one.

950

111

Cartan McCarthy & Co (large ornate intertwined logo)San Francisco; glop top mold with absolutely the crudest tooled top around, shades of yellowish green amber, bubbles, tears, extreme crudity & whittle, 1/8” cats-eye ding on the side of the LTC, heavy offset base, seeds, swirls, extremely crisp strike, the crudest one we’ve seen.

295

114

Casey & Kavanaugh / monogram / Sacramento, Cal. ; tooled, various shades of reddish orange amber, crude with lots of swirling, bold crisp strike, couple light scratches, crisp strike, several nice bubbles, neck leans right, good whittle at the shoulder, fancy!

325

134

Chevaliers / Ginger Brandy / Trade (FC&Co mono on shoulder) Mark; crude glop top, the top was applied crookedly and leans hard to the left, substantial spillover is present, light orange amber, several bubbles, good strike, odd bump air vent on shoulder (similar to J. Moores), nice.

325

134a

Chevaliers / Ginger Brandy / Trade (FC&Co mono on shoulder) Mark; tooled, light orange amber, a few seed bubbles, somewhat lightly struck - although the monogram is bold, clean, 3mm x 5mm catseye ding on neck, two 2mm flat flakes on lip, one of 2 known tooled tops.

185

135

The F. Chevalier Co. / (ornate intertwined logo) / Whiskey Merchants / San Francisco, Cal. / “Net Contents (etc.)” at base; shades of orange amber, bold strike, some decent character, a few bubbles (one is open by 3mm on the left seam at the shoulder, a couple fine scratches, nice.

75

147

55

158

Choice Old / large ornate picture of a crown / Cabinet /Ky / Bourbon (all in circular slug plate) / Crane Hastings & Co. / Sole Agents / San Francsico; tooled dark amber, exceptionally strong mold definition, this is the crisp new mold with sharply chiseled embossing, inspection under black light shows a resin flake repair to the lip – approx. ¼ of the circumference from zero to 3/16” in depth – it does not radiate to the inside - appears to have been a lip edge ice-pick flake, it’s a good repair but Marty Hall could rework it and make it completely invisible.

425

167

Bottled by Clinch Mercantile / Dealers in / Wines and Liquors / Grass Valley / Cal (shoulder monogram).; tooled, clear, several bubbles, bold strike, 3 mm cats-eye ping on base (tough to find), been a couple of years since we’ve seen one of these.
