MY two picks for SOTW

As I write this (end of November 2004), eBay is going through a third wave of some spectacular shot glass offerings. Robin wrote about the second auction installment in his current (November 21, 2004), SOTW feature.

But as I read his pick for SOTW, I wondered--is it possible to have a "shot of the week" for more common (and possibly more overlooked) glass? I decided that the answer is yes, and so, with all due respect to our glassmaster, here are MY two picks for SOTW:

Within days of each other, two spectacular examples of shot glass etching sold on eBay. Both are from Illinois, and both are shown here. The Sonnenschein glass is from Chicago, while the Zahringers shot is from Peoria. The Sonnenschein sold for $18.00, and the Zahringers sold for about $50.00, but in terms of quality of etching, these two glasses are priceless. Look at the fine detail; notice, e.g., the camel and the pyramid of the Zahringers. I am convinced that the same company etched both these glasses; the high quality of the work seems identical.

George Truog is often hailed as one of the foremost examples of superlative glass etching, but when you put one of these glasses next to a Truog glass, Truog, in my opinion, comes off like a bumbling amateur. The quality is just that good. Either glass would be a great addition to one's collection. They don't get any better than this.
